Rebooting Research Communication

The research publications of 350 years ago are recognisable in both format and style today’s scholarly – the research paper and the book have proved to be amazingly robust technologies for the dissemination of knowledge.  However, over the last 40 years the relationship between research, the data produced in the pursuit of knowledge and the data that describe those data has changed significantly.  At the same time, the age of “hero scientist” who is able to conceive of a research problem, develop the theory, design and carry out the experiment, capture and process the data, interpret the data and write the paper is at an end.  These are just two of the forces that are changing how we need to communicate research.  This talk will examine the challenges of scholarly publication, look at some current innovations, and take a look into a possible future for research communication.
